THIS LAND, THIS MIND

People elsewhere rumor, and falsely say our Patriarch came from the West. It is true that the Patriarch transmitted the Eye Treasure of Dharma, named it Zen, and foresaw it as a flower with five petals and countless seeds. It is true that tens of thousands of auspicious people have fathomed the secret words, practiced the teachings of mind, and realized the originally spontaneous purity. The West is this land; this land is the West.  Oh -- anciently and now, the sun and the moon; anciently and now, the mountain and the river. 

It’s wrong to touch it [this land or this mind]; thus, Buddha will be misunderstood. Such a tiny mistake leads to hundreds, thousands of losses. You should observe your mind skillfully; don’t deceive future generations. Otherwise, if you ask me, the answer is that I originally have no words.

VÔ NGÔN THÔNG (? - 826)

NOTE: Did Zen Master Vo Ngon Thong say a lot of words, or without any word? Did Buddha say a lot of words, or without any word? The name Vo Ngon Thong means “Understanding without a word.” You should try that way.Listen to your mind. Listen gently to your mind right now. You would hear some voices, some sounds, some noises. When you hear something, you know you are hearing the manifestation of the mind. All the sounds from the birds, the cars, the winds, and so on are all your mind. Also, all the sounds from your memories, your imaginations, your dreams, and so on are all your mind. Listen. Breathe in and out gently, and listen to the mind. 

You might remember the koan that asks about your face before you were born. You can try another version: listen to where before a sound arises; listen to your mind before it manifests. Try that. Don’t say that it ever has a sound or a word.

ĐẤT NÀY, TÂM NÀY 

Các nơi đồn đại, Dối tự huyên truyền, Rằng Thủy Tổ ta, Gốc từ Tây Thiên.  Truyền pháp Nhãn tạng, Gọi đó là Thiền. Một hoa năm cánh,  Hạt giống liên miên.  Thầm hợp lời mật, Muôn ngàn có duyên. Đều gọi tâm tông, Thanh tịnh bản nhiên. Tây Thiên cõi này.  Cõi này Tây Thiên.  Xưa nay nhật nguyệt, Xưa nay sơn xuyên.  Chạm đến thành trệ, Phật tổ thành oan, Sai đó hào ly,  Mất đó trăm ngàn.  Ngươi khéo quán sát, Chớ lừa cháu con, Ngay như hỏi ta, Ta vốn không lời.

GHI NHẬN: Có phải Thiền Sư Vô Ngôn Thông đã nói nhiều lời, hay không một lời? Đức Phật đã nói nhiều lời, hay không một lời? Tên ngài Vô Ngôn Thông mang ý nghĩa “Hiểu biết không qua lời nói.” Bạn nên thử cách này. Hãy lắng nghe tâm bạn. Hãy dịu dàng lắng nghe tâm bạn ngay lúc này. Bạn có thể nghe ra vài giọng nói, vài âm thanh, vài tiếng ồn. Khi bạn nghe ra một tiếng nào, bạn biết bạn đang nghe tâm hiển lộng. Tất cả âm thanh từ những con chim, những chiếc xe, gió thổi, và vân vân đều là tâm bạn. Thêm nữa, tất cả những âm thanh từ trí nhớ của bạn, từ tưởng tượng của bạn, từ giấc mơ của bạn, và vân vân đều là tâm bạn. Hãy lắng nghe. Hãy thở vào và ra dịu dàng, và lắng nghe tâm.

Bạn có thể nhớ tới công án hỏi về khuôn mặt của bạn trứơc khi bạn sinh ra đời. Bạn có thể thử một phiên bản khác: hãy lắng nghe nơi trước khi một âm thanh khởi lên; hãy lắng nghe tâm bạn trước khi nó hiển lộng. Hãy thử như thế. Đừng nói rằng nó có một âm thanh hay một chữ nào.
