Nhĩ thời Vô Tận Ý Bồ Tát tức tùng tọa khởi, thiên đản hữu kiên, hợp chưởng hướng Phật, nhi tác thị ngôn,
At that time, Bodhisattva Infinite Resolve rose from his seat, bared his right shoulder, joined his palms, and facing the Buddha, said,
Thế Tôn, Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát dĩ hà nhân duyên, danh Quán Thế Âm,
“O World Honored One, how did Guanshiyin Bodhisattva get the name Guanshiyin?”
Phật cáo Vô Tận Ý Bồ Tát,
The Buddha answered Bodhisattva Infinite Resolve,
Thiện nam tử, nhược hữu vô lượng bách thiên vạn ức chúng sanh, thọ chư khổ não, văn thị Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát,
“Good Man, if all the countless hundreds of thousands of millions of living beings tormented by misery and pain hear of Guanshiyin Bodhisattva,
Nhất tâm xưng danh, Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát tức thời quán kỳ âm thanh, giai đắc giải thoát,
And with all their hearts invoke his name, Guanshiyin Bodhisattva will immediately respond to their prayers and set them free.
Nhược hữu trì thị Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát danh giả, thiết nhập đại hỏa, hỏa bất năng thiêu,
If those who hold the name of Guanshiyin Bodhisattva should fall into a great fire, the fire will not burn them,
Do thị Bồ Tát uy thần lực cố,
Because of Guanshiyin Bodhisattva’s awesome spiritual power.
Nhược vi đại thủy sở phiêu, xưng kỳ danh hiệu, tức đắc thiển xứ,
If they are being tossed about in deep and treacherous waters and call his name, they will quickly reach the shallows.
Nhược hữu bách thiên vạn ức chúng sanh,
If hundreds of thousand of myraids of millions of men
Vị cầu kim ngân, lưu ly, xa cừ, mã não, san hô, hổ phách,trân châu đẳng bảo,
In search of gold, silver, lapis lazuli, tridacna and carnelian, coral, amber, pearls, and other precious treasures,
Nhập ư đại hải, giả sử hắc phong xuy kỳ thuyền phưởng,phiêu đọa la sát quỷ quốc,
May run afoul of violent squalls that blow their ships to the lands of raksasas.
Kỳ trung nhược hữu nãi chí nhất nhân xưng Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát danh giả,
But if one man among them calls the name of Guanshiyin Bodhisattva,
Thị chư nhân đẳng, giai đắc giải thoát la sát chi nạn,
Then the entire group will all be saved from the throes of the raksasas.
Dĩ thị nhân duyên danh Quán Thế Âm,
For this reason he is called ‘The Enlightened One Who Listens to the Voices of the World.’
Nhược phục hữu nhân lâm đương bị hại, xưng Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát danh giả,
If someone facing deadly harm recites Guanshiyin Bodhisattva’s name,
Bỉ sở chấp đao trượng, tầm đoạn đoạn hoại, nhi đắc giải thoát,
The weapons of the assailants will break apart and he will get away.
Nhược tam thiên đại thiên quốc độ, mãn trung dạ xoa la sát dục lai não nhân,
Even if the entire three-fold, great, thousand-world system were teeming with yaksas and raksasas bent on vexing men,
Văn kỳ xưng Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát danh giả,
When the evil demons hear the name of Guanshiyin Bodhisattva called out by these men,
Thị chư ác quỷ thượng bất năng dĩ ác nhãn thị chi, huống phục gia hại,
They will not be able to see them with their wicked eyes, much less do them in!
Thiết phục hữu nhân, nhược hữu tội, nhược vô tội, nữu giới già tỏa kiểm hệ kỳ thân,
If there is a person, whether innocent or guilty, who is locked in stocks or shackled by ropes and chains,
Xưng Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát danh giả, giai tất đoạn hoại, tức đắc giải thoát,
His fetters will snap and fall away, letting him go free as soon as he invokes Guanshiyin Bodhisattva’s name.
Nhược tam thiên đại thiên quốc độ, mãn trung oán tặc
Suppose vicious thieves in legions that could fill a three-fold, great, thousand-world system
Hữu nhất thương chủ, tương chư thương nhân, tê trì trọng bảo,kinh quá hiểm lộ,
Infest a perilous road along which a merchant chief guides a traders’ caravan laden with precious jewels.
Kỳ trung nhất nhân, tác thị xướng ngôn, chư thiện nam tử,vật đắc khủng bố,
If one man among them proclaims: ‘Good Men, do not be afraid!
Nhữ đẳng ưng đương nhất tâm xưng Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát danh hiệu,thị Bồ Tát năng dĩ vô úy thí ư chúng sanh,
With all your hearts invoke the name of Guanshiyin Bodhisattva, the Enlightened One Who Gives Courage to All Beings!
Nhữ đẳng nhược xưng danh giả, ư thử oán tặc đương đắc giải thoát,
If we beseech this Bodhisattva, we will surely escape these thieves.’
Chúng thương nhân văn, câu phát thanh ngôn,
Upon hearing this exhortation, if all the traders in unison cry out,
Nam Mô Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát, xưng kỳ danh cố, tức đắc giải thoát,
‘Namo Guanshiyin Bodhisattva!’ By virtue of calling out Guanshiyin’s name, they will immediately go free.
Vô Tận Ý, Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát Ma Ha Tát uy thần chi lực, nguy nguy như thị,
Infinite Resolve! How imposing is the awesome spiritual power of the Great Bodhisattva Who Listens to the Voices of the World!
Nhược hữu chúng sanh đa ư dâm dục, thường niệm cung kính Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát, tiện đắc ly dục,
If any living being with weightly desires can constantly revere and keep in mind Guanshiyin Bodhisattva, his passions will subside.
Nhược đa sân khuể, thường niệm cung kính Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát, tiện đắc ly sân,
If someone with much anger can constantly revere and keep in mind Guanshiyin Bodhisattva, then his anger will subside.
Nhược đa ngu si, thường niệm cung kính Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát， tiện đắc ly si,
If someone dull and foolish can constantly revere and keep in mind Guanshiyin Bodhisattva, he will leave stupidity behind.
Vô Tận Ý, Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát hữu như thị đẳng đại uy thần lực, đa sở nhiêu ích,
Infinite Resolve! The Bodhisattva Who Listens to the Voices of the World, with his magnificent spiritual power, confers such abundant benefits as these.
Thị cố chúng sanh thường ưng tâm niệm,
And so, living beings should always keep him in their hearts and hold his name in mind.
Nhược hữu nữ nhân, thiết dục cầu nam, lễ bái cúng dường Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát, tiện sanh phước đức trí tuệ chi nam,
If women seeking sons bow to and make offerings to the Bodhisattva Guanshiyin, they will give birth to sons happy, virtuous, and wise.
Thiết dục cầu nữ, tiện sanh đoan chánh hữu tướng chi nữ, túc thực đức bổn, chúng nhân ái kính,
If instead, they wish for daughters, they will bear gifted daughters with deep-rooted, wholesome characters, beloved and respected by all.
Vô Tận Ý, Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát hữu như thị lực,
Infinite Resolve! Such is the power of the Bodhisattva Who Listens to the Voices of the World.
Nhược hữu chúng sanh cung kính lễ bái Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát， phước bất đường quyên,
Any living being who worships and makes offerings to Guanshiyin Bodhisattva will never take a loss.
Thị cố chúng sanh giai ưng thọ trì Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát danh hiệu
Therefore, every living being should hold Guanshiyin Bodhisattva’s name in mind.
Vô Tận Ý, nhược hữu nhân thọ trì lục thập nhị ức Hằng Hà sa Bồ Tát danh tự,
Infinite Resolve! Suppose someone held the names of Bodhisattvas to the number of grains of sand in sixty-two million Ganges Rivers,
Phục tận hình cúng dường ẩm thực, y phục, ngọa cụ, y dược,
And for this person’s entire life, made offerings to them all of food and drink, clothes, bedding, and medicine.
Ư nhữ ý vân hà, thị thiện nam tử, thiện nữ nhân, công đức đa phủ,
What is your opinion? Would the merit and virtue accrued by that good man or woman be abundant?”
Vô Tận Ý ngôn, thậm đa, Thế Tôn,
Infinite Resolve replied, “Extremely abundant, World Honored One, very great indeed!”
Phật ngôn, nhược phục hữu nhân thọ trì Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát danh hiệu, nãi chí nhất thời lễ bái cúng dường,
The Buddha said, “Yet if someone else held the name of Guanshiyin Bodhisattva, bowed and made an offering but one time,
Thị nhị nhân phước chánh đẳng vô dị, ư bách thiên vạn ức kiếp bất khả cùng tận,
The blessings of these two people would be identical, the same in every way, and would endure for quadrillions of aeons.
Vô Tận Ý, thọ trì Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát danh hiệu đắc như thị vô lượng vô biên phước đức chi lợi,
Infinite Resolve! Holding the name of Guanshiyin Bodhisattva brings blessings and benefits as limitless and boundless as these.”
Vô Tận Ý Bồ Tát bạch Phật ngôn, Thế Tôn, Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát vân hà du thử Ta Bà thế giới,
Again, the Bodhisattva Infinite Resolve asked the Buddha, “World Honored One, how does Guanshiyin Bodhisattva wander in this Saha World?
Vân hà nhi vị chúng sanh thuyết Pháp, phương tiện chi lực, kỳ sự vân hà,
How does he speak Dharma for living beings, and what manner of resourcefulness does he command?”
Phật cáo Vô Tận Ý Bồ Tát,
The Buddha answered Bodhisattva Infinite Resolve,
Thiện nam tử, nhược hữu quốc độ chúng sanh, ưng dĩ Phật thân đắc độ giả,
“If there is a living being in some country who can be liberated by a Buddha,
Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát tức hiện Phật thân nhi vị thuyết Pháp,
Guanshiyin Bodhisattva appears as a Buddha and teaches him the Dharma.
Ưng dĩ Bích Chi Phật thân đắc độ giả, tức hiện Bích Chi Phật thân nhi vị thuyết Pháp,
If someone can be liberated by a Pratyeka Buddha, he appears as a Pratyeka Buddha and teaches him the Dharma.
Ưng dĩ Thanh Văn thân đắc độ giả, tức hiện Thanh Văn thân nhi vị thuyết Pháp,
If someone can be liberated by a Sound-hearer, he appears as a Sound-hearer and teaches him the Dharma.
Ưng dĩ Phạm Vương thân đắc độ giả, tức hiện Phạm Vương thân nhi vị thuyết Pháp,
If someone can be liberated by a Brahma-heaven King, he appears as a Brahma-heaven King and teaches him the Dharma.
Ưng dĩ Đế Thích thân đắc độ giả, tức hiện Đế Thích thân nhi vị thuyết Pháp,
If someone can be liberated by Sakra, he appears as Sakra and teaches him the Dharma.
Ưng dĩ Tự Tại Thiên thân đắc độ giả, tức hiện Tự Tại Thiên thân nhi vị thuyết Pháp,
If someone can be liberated by the God of Comfort, he appears as the God of Comfort and teaches him the Dharma.
Ưng dĩ Đại Tự Tại Thiên thân đắc độ giả, tức hiện Đại Tự Tại Thiên thân nhi vị thuyết Pháp,
If someone can be liberated by the God of Great Comfort, he appears as the God of Great Comfort and teaches him the Dharma.
Ưng dĩ Thiên Đại Tướng Quân thân đắc độ giả, tức hiện Thiên Đại Tướng Quân thân nhi vị thuyết Pháp,
If someone can be liberated by a mighty General of the Gods, he appears as a mighty General of the Gods and teaches him the Dharma.
Ưng dĩ Tỳ Sa Môn thân đắc độ giả, tức hiện Tỳ Sa Môn thân nhi vị thuyết Pháp,
If someone can be liberated by the God Vaisravana, he appears as Vaisravana and teaches him the Dharma.
Ưng dĩ Tiểu Vương thân đắc độ giả, tức hiện Tiểu Vương thân nhi vị thuyết Pháp,
If someone can be liberated by a minor king, he appears as a minor king and teaches him the Dharma.
Ưng dĩ Trưởng Giả thân đắc độ giả, tức hiện Trưởng Giả thân nhi vị thuyết Pháp,
If someone can be liberated by an elder, he appears as an elder and teaches him the Dharma.
Ưng dĩ Cư Sĩ thân đắc độ giả, tức hiện Cư Sĩ thân nhi vị thuyết Pháp,
If someone can be liberated by a lay-person, he appears as a lay-person and teaches him the Dharma.
Ưng dĩ Tể Quan thân đắc độ giả, tức hiện Tể Quan thân nhi vị thuyết Pháp.
If someone can be liberated by a minister of state, he appears as a minister of state and teaches him the Dharma.
Ưng dĩ Bà La Môn thân đắc độ giả, tức hiện Bà La Môn thân nhi vị thuyết Pháp,
If someone can be liberated by a Brahman, he appears as a Brahman and teaches him the Dharma.
Ưng dĩ Tỳ Kheo, Tỳ Kheo Ni, Ưu Bà Tắc, Ưu Bà Di thân đắc độ giả,
If someone can be liberated by a monk or nun, a layman or a laywoman,
Tức hiện Tỳ Kheo, Tỳ Kheo Ni, Ưu Bà Tắc, Ưu Bà Di thân nhi vị thuyết Pháp,
He appears as a monk or nun, a layman or laywoman and teaches him the Dharma.
Ưng dĩ Trưởng Giả, Cư Sĩ, Tể Quan, Bà La Môn phụ nữ thân đắc độ giả,
If someone can be liberated by the wife of an elder, layman, minister of state, or Brahman,
Tức hiện phụ nữ thân nhi vị thuyết Pháp.
He appears as a wife and teaches him the Dharma.
Ưng dĩ đồng nam đồng nữ thân đắc độ giả， tức hiện đồng nam đồng nữ thân nhi vị thuyết Pháp,
If someone can be liberated by a lad or maiden, he appears as a lad or maiden and teaches him the Dharma.
Ưng dĩ thiên, long, dạ xoa, càn thát bà, a tu la, ca lâu la, khẩn na la,
If someone can be liberated by a god, dragon, yaksa, or gandharva, an asura, garuda, kinnara,
Ma hầu la già, nhân, phi nhân đẳng thân đắc độ giả, tức giai hiện chi nhi vị thuyết Pháp.
Or mahoraga, a human, nonhuman, and so forth, he appears accordingly and teaches him the Dharma.
Ưng dĩ Chấp Kim Cang Thần đắc độ giả， tức hiện Chấp Kim Cang Thần nhi vị thuyết Pháp.
And if someone can be liberated by a Vajra-wielding Spirit, he appears as a Vajra-wielding Spirit and teaches him the Dharma.
Vô Tận Ý, thị Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát thành tựu như thị công đức,
Infinite Resolve! Such are the meritorious deeds done by Guanshiyin,
Dĩ chủng chủng hình du chư quốc độ, độ thoát chúng sanh.
The Bodhisattva who roams throughout the world and appears in various forms to rescue living beings.
Thị cố nhữ đẳng ưng đương nhất tâm cúng dường Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát.
Therefore you should all wholeheartedly make offerings to the Bodhisattva Who Listens to the Voices of the World.
Thị Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát Ma Ha Tát ư bố úy cấp nạn chi trung, năng thí vô úy.
In times of terror, crisis, and trouble, the Great Bodhisattva Guanshiyin can bestow courage and dispel all fears.
Thị cố thử Ta Bà thế giới giai hiệu chi vi Thí Vô Úy Giả.
Therefore, all throughout the Saha world we call him Giver of Courage.”
Vô Tận Ý Bồ Tát bạch Phật ngôn,
The Bodhisattva Infinite Resolve said to the Buddha,
Thế Tôn, ngã kim đương cúng dường Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát.
“World Honored One, I will now make an offering to the Bodhisattva Guanshiyin.”
Tức giải cảnh chúng bảo châu anh lạc, giá trị bách thiên lượng kim, nhi dĩ dữ chi tác thị ngôn:
And so saying, he removed his rosary of pearls, worth hundreds of thousands of taels of gold and presented it to the Bodhisattva with these words:
Nhân giả, thọ thử Pháp thí, trân bảo anh lạc.
“O Humane One, please accept my offering of Dharma, this rosary of precious pearls.”
Thời Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát bất khẳng thọ chi.
But Guanshiyin Bodhisattva would not accept the pearls.
Vô Tận Ý phục bạch Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát ngôn,
Infinite Resolve once more entreated Guanshiyin,
Nhân giả, mẫn ngã đẳng cố, thọ thử anh lạc.
“O Humane One, out of pity for us, please receive the rosary.”
Nhĩ thời Phật cáo Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát,
Then the Buddha said to Guanshiyin,
Đương mẫn thử Vô Tận Ý Bồ Tát, cập tứ chúng,
“Out of compassion for Infinite Resolve and the Four Assemblies,
Thiên, long, dạ xoa, càn thát bà, a tu la, ca lâu la, khẩn na la,
For the gods, dragons, yaksas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras,
Ma hầu la già, nhân, phi nhân đẳng cố, thọ thị anh lạc,
Mahoragas, humans, and nonhuman beings, and the rest, accept this rosary.”
Tức thời Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát mẫn chư tứ chúng,
Then Guanshiyin Bodhisattva, out of pity for the Four Assemblies,
Cập ư thiên, long, nhân phi nhân đẳng, thọ kỳ anh lạc, phân tác nhị phần.
For the gods, dragons, humans, non humans, and the rest, accepted the rosary and divided it into two parts.
Nhất phần phụng Thích Ca Mâu Ni Phật, nhất phần phụng Đa Bảo Phật tháp.
One strand he offered to Sakyamuni Buddha, the other to the stupa of the Buddha Many Jewels.
Vô Tận Ý, Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát hữu như thị tự tại thần lực, du ư Ta Bà thế giới.
Infinite Resolve! With such sovereign spiritual powers does the Bodhisattva Guanshiyin traverse the Saha World.
Nhĩ thời Vô Tận Ý Bồ Tát dĩ kệ vấn viết:
Then the Bodhisattva Infinite Resolve put his questions into verses and asked them once again:
Thế Tôn diệu tướng cụ,
“World Honored One, Complete with Wondrous Hallmarks,
Ngã kim trùng vấn bỉ.
Several questions I would ask again.
Phật tử hà nhân duyên,
How did this disciple of the Buddha,
Danh vi Quán Thế Âm?
Earn the name Guanshiyin?”
Cụ túc diệu tướng tôn,
Then the World Honored One, his every feature full,
Kệ đáp Vô Tận Ý:
Answered in melodious verse to Infinite Resolve:
Nhữ thính Quán Âm hạnh
“Come listen and I’ll tell you Guanyin’s story
Thiện ứng chư phương sở,
How deftly he responds to every side;
Hoằng thệ thâm như hải,
Spanning ages past the ken of numbers,
Lịch kiếp bất tư nghì.
With oceanic vows both deep and wide.
Thị đa thiên ức Phật
Serving ancient Buddhas, several billions,
Phát đại thanh tịnh nguyện.
His pure and lofty vows in brief I’ll tell.
Ngã vị nhữ lược thuyết,
Whoever sees his face or learns about him,
Văn danh cập kiến thân,
Who can hold this Bodhisattva’s name,
Tâm niệm bất không quá
Will leave behind the sorrows of existence,
Năng diệt chư hữu khổ
And so this cultivation’s not in vain!
Giả sử hưng hại ý,
Should you be pushed into a raging fire,
Thôi lạc đại hỏa khanh,
By enemies so harmful, mean, and cruel,
Niệm bỉ Quán Âm lực
Evoke the strength of Guanyin Bodhisattva
Hỏa khanh biến thành trì.
The blaze will turn into a limpid pool.
Hoặc phiêu lưu cự hải,
If cast adrift upon the mighty ocean,
Long ngư chư quỷ nạn,
Where dragons, ghosts, and sharks in turn surround,
Niệm bỉ Quán Âm lực,
Evoke the strength of Guanyin Bodhisattva,
Ba lãng bất năng một.
You’ll float atop the waves and will not drown.
Hoặc tại tu di phong,
Suppose an evil person pushed you headlong,
Vi nhân sở thôi đọa,
From atop the peak called Wondrous Tall,
Niệm bỉ Quán Âm lực,
Evoke the strength of Guanyin Bodhisattva,
Như nhật hư không trụ.
And like the sun in space you will not fall.
Hoặc bị ác nhân trục,
Perhaps you tumble down from Vajra Mountain,
Đọa lạc kim cang sơn,
Fleeing wicked ruffians who pursue,
Niệm bỉ Quán Âm lực,
Evoke the strength of Guanyin Bodhisattva,
Bất năng tổn nhất mao.
And not the slightest harm will come to you.
Hoặc trị oán tặc nhiễu,
Surrounded by a mob of heartless bandits,
Các chấp đao gia hại,
Their weapons drawn, with murder on their minds,
Niệm bỉ Quán Âm lực,
Evoke the strength of Guanyin Bodhisattva,
Hàm tức khởi từ tâm.
Their evil hearts will soften and turn kind.
Hoặc tao vương nạn khổ,
If you are on the verge of execution,
Lâm hình dục thọ chung,
Sentenced by the State, condemned to die,
Niệm bỉ Quán Âm lực,
Evoke the strength of Guanyin Bodhisattva,
Đao tầm đoạn đoạn hoại.
The sword will break to pieces just in time.
Hoặc tù cấm già tỏa,
If bound and chained, restrained by ropes and shackles,
Thủ túc bị nữu giới,
With hands and feet confined in stocks and gyves,
Niệm bỉ Quán Âm lực,
Evoke the strength of Guanyin Bodhisattva,
Thích nhiên đắc giải thoát.
The fetters by themselves will fall aside.
Chú trớ chư độc dược,
Hexes, poison, magic spells, and voodoo,
Sở dục hại thân giả.
Cast by those who plot to do you in,
Niệm bỉ Quán Âm lực,
Return to curse the sorcerer who sent them,
Hoàn trước ư bổn nhân.
When you invoke the power of Guanshiyin.
Hoặc ngộ ác la sát,
If you meet with evil raksasas,
Độc long chư quỷ đẳng,
Lethal dragons, ghosts, and vicious beasts,
Niệm bỉ Quán Âm lực,
Evoke the strength of Guanyin Bodhisattva,
Thời tất bất cảm hại.
None will dare to harm you in the least.
Nhược ác thú vi nhiễu,
Circled round and trapped by savage creatures,
Lợi nha trảo khả bố,
With razor fangs and claws that terrify,
Niệm bỉ Quán Âm lực,
Evoke the strength of Guanyin Bodhisattva,
Tật tẩu vô biên phương.
And they will quickly flee to every side.
Ngoan xà cập phúc yết,
Facing vipers, scorpions, and pythons,
Khí độc yên hỏa nhiên,
Belching poisons, fumes, and scorching flames,
Niệm bỉ Quán Âm lực,
Evoke the strength of Guanyin Bodhisattva,
Tầm thanh tự hồi khứ.
They’ll shrink and turn away before his name.
Vân lôi cổ xiết điện,
When thunder-clouds explode and lightning crackles,
Giáng bạc chú đại vũ,
Dumping sleet, and hail, and heavy rains,
Niệm bỉ Quán Âm lực,
Evoke the strength of Guanyin Bodhisattva,
Ứng thời đắc tiêu tán.
The skies will clear, the storms will drift away.
Chúng sanh bị khổn ách,
Living beings harassed and vexed, and troubled,
Vô lượng khổ bức thân,
By countless sorrows, burdened without cease,
Quán Âm diệu trí lực,
This Bodhisattva’s wondrous wisdom-power,
Năng cứu thế gian khổ.
Can help the suffering world obtain relief.
Cụ túc thần thông lực,
Perfect and complete in psychic power,
Quảng tu trí phương tiện,
Widely versed in wisdom’s subtle skills,
Thập phương chư quốc độ,
In lands throughout the ten directions,
Vô sát bất hiện thân.
The Bodhisattva manifests at will.
Chủng chủng chư ác thú,
The agony amid the Evil Pathways,
Địa ngục quỷ súc sanh,
The torments of the ghosts, the beasts, the hells,
Sanh lão bệnh tử khổ,
The pains of birth, the aged, sick, and dying,
Dĩ tiệm tất linh diệt.
The Bodhisattva gradually dispels.
Chân quán thanh tịnh quán,
O Thou of true regard, of pure regard,
Quảng đại trí tuệ quán,
Regard far-reaching, wise, and truly great,
Bi quán cập từ quán,
Thy loving-kindness, sympathy, and deep regard,
Thường nguyện thường chiêm ngưỡng.
I vow to ever laud and venerate.
Vô cấu thanh tịnh quang,
Your wisdom-sun can break apart the darkness,
Tuệ nhật phá chư ám,
Immaculate, your virgin light unfurls,
Năng phục tai phong hỏa,
To quell disasters, winds, and storms, and fires,
Phổ minh chiếu thế gian.
A universal light for all the world.
Bi thể giới lôi chấn,
Wellspring of compassion, precepts’ thunder,
Từ ý diệu đại vân.
Your wondrous cloud of kindness covers all.
Chú cam lồ Pháp vũ,
Extinguishing the fires of life’s afflictions,
Diệt trừ phiền não diệm.
As the rain of sweet-dew Dharma falls.
Tranh tụng kinh quan xử,
In trials, suits, and civil confrontations,
Bố úy quân trận trung,
When fear runs high, when warring armies near,
Niệm bỉ Quán Âm lực,
Evoke the strength of Guanyin Bodhisattva,
Chúng oán tất thoái tán.
Vengeance and bad feelings disappear.
Diệu âm Quán Thế Âm
Fine and wondrous sound: Guanshiyin!
Phạm âm hải triều âm.
Brahma-sound, steady as the tides.
Thắng bỉ thế gian âm,
A name transcending every worldly sound,
Thị cố tu thường niệm.
Guanyin! Stay forever in my mind.
Niệm niệm vật sanh nghi,
Let not a single doubt arise to haunt us,
Quán Thế Âm tịnh Thánh,
For Guanyin Bodhisattva, Holy Sage,
Ư khổ não tử ách,
Amid life’s troubles, and the pains of dying,
Năng vị tác y hộ.
Will ever be our refuge, and our aid.
Cụ nhất thiết công đức,
O Holy One! Replete with every virtue,
Từ nhãn thị chúng sanh.
Your kindly gaze beholds all living beings.
Phước tụ hải vô lượng.
A boundless sea you are, of every blessing.
Thị cố ưng đảnh lễ!
And let us bow to offer our esteem!”
Nhĩ thời Trì Địa Bồ Tát tức tùng tọa khởi tiền bạch Phật ngôn
Then Bodhisattva, Guardian of the Earth arose from his seat, went before the Buddha and proclaimed,
Thế Tôn, nhược hữu chúng sanh văn thị Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát phẩm
“O! World Honored One, living beings must have abundant merit and virtue to hear this chapter
Tự tại chi nghiệp, Phổ Môn thị hiện thần thông lực giả, đương tri thị nhân công đức bất thiểu.
On Guanshiyin Bodhisattva’s sovereign deeds, and how he universally responds with his spiritual power.”
Phật thuyết thị Phổ Môn phẩm thời, chúng trung bát vạn tứ thiên chúng sanh
And while the Buddha spoke this Universal Door Chapter, eighty-four thousand living beings from among the assembly
Giai phát vô đẳng đẳng A Nậu Đa La Tam Miệu Tam Bồ Đề tâm。
